2021: Health — Day 19

I want to tell you a story.

As a child growing up I was told a number of things and some of them were:

  • Susan’s tall
  • It’s lovely to be tall
  • She’s a talented sewer

And some of them weren’t so flattering:

  • Oh do you really think you should wear that? (implying I was too fat for it)
  • What are you going to do about that? And pointing to my thigh that was sticking out
  • “She’s a size 14 you know”. This was said to a family member when I was only 13 — what did I know about sizes or care.
  • Make sure you get the biggest size, you’ll grow into it

And this played out throughout my life.

EVEN AT MY FITTEST, IT STILL WASN’T ENOUGH.

By this stage I wasn’t looking for validation but I was still ‘picked apart’.

I tell you this not because I’m looking for compliments or a pep talk.

I’m telling you this because weight has always been a big part of my life and the stories I had are, what you weight indicates:

  • Who likes you and who doesn’t
  • Whether you get selected for things and whether you don’t
  • What you can literally do in life, and what you can’t

NONE of which is true.

However weight management and, over the last two years, weight loss, have been a big focal point for me, which has probably flowed onto the content I provide you.

BUT I WANT YOU TO KNOW THIS:

Health is about so much more than weight.

Sure weight can play a part but so can:

  • What you think
  • How you feel
  • The unique health challenges that you may have
  • The products you use on your body
  • What you eat
  • What you drink
  • What air you breathe in, and so much more.

ULTIMATELY FOR ME, HEALTH IS ABOUT CHOICE.

The healthier you are in mind, body and soul, the more options you have, because if your:

  • Sleep deprived
  • In pain
  • Tired all the time
  • Having constant mood swings
  • Sick with colds and flu

Why would you ever feel like getting out of bed? I get it — that would be completely normal.

So when I talk about health and wellness, know that I talk about it from a whole person perspective — not just weight, although given that’s my subconscious — it might be something that creeps in (and I know a shit tone about it)!

SO WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST HEALTH CONCERN?
